Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome
has announced the cancellation of its upcoming weekend airshows at the start of the 2025 season due to regulatory delays affecting critical personnel certifications. The decision was detailed in a letter (click

) from Clay Hammond, the Aerodrome’s President and Chief Pilot, addressing patrons and supporters. The cancellations are primarily the result of pending FAA renewals for the Aerodrome’s Air Bosses-the individuals responsible for overseeing airshow safety, timing, and continuity. The Air Boss position combines the roles of director and stage manager, ensuring that each performance runs smoothly and adheres to stringent regulatory standards. According to Hammond, two of the Aerodrome’s three FAA-authorized Air Bosses were due for certification renewal at the end of the previous season. Despite initiating the renewal process well in advance, the FAA has yet to grant approval, delaying the start of the airshow season.
Adding to the challenge, the third Air Boss is currently unavailable due to a family emergency, further complicating staffing for the initial weekends. The Aerodrome is actively coordinating with Air Bosses from the broader regional and national airshow circuit to provide interim coverage, but these arrangements are still being finalized. Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome’s model differs from many airshows nationwide. Rather than hosting single annual events with traveling performers, the Aerodrome puts on airshows nearly every weekend throughout its 20-week season using a locally based team of pilots, Air Bosses, and support staff. This unique approach, while beloved by fans, introduces complexities when aligning with FAA regulations designed around more traditional airshow formats.
Despite these setbacks, Hammond expressed confidence in reaching a resolution. “Headwinds can slow down a journey, but that does not necessarily change the direction or destination,” he wrote, thanking supporters for their loyalty and urging patience as the Aerodrome works through regulatory processes. The Aerodrome encourages attendees and fans to stay informed via its official website and social media channels, where updates on show schedules and developments will be posted. While this pause is a temporary setback, Old Rhinebeck remains committed to delivering the rich, historic aviation experiences its patrons have come to expect.
