Ogun Empowers 33,530 Women With Financial Skills

Empowering Women Through Education and Economic Opportunities

The Ogun State Government has made significant strides in empowering women through a comprehensive initiative that focuses on financial education, business development, gender awareness, and life skills. As of now, 33,530 women have been trained and equipped with the necessary tools to enhance their economic participation and improve their overall well-being.

Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, highlighted the impact of this effort during a recent workshop in Abeokuta. The event brought together 150 newly engaged ward facilitators under the third phase of the Ogun State Women Empowerment Scheme, known as Okoowo Dapo.

A Strategic Approach to Women’s Empowerment

The Okoowo Dapo initiative was designed as a strategic social intervention aimed at boosting women’s involvement in economic activities. By providing access to financial support, capacity building, and entrepreneurial opportunities, the scheme seeks to improve the livelihoods of women and their families.

Since its launch in 2022, the program has reached thousands of women across all 20 Local Government Areas of Ogun State. It has not only provided hope but also practical tools for self-reliance, transforming many small ideas into successful enterprises.

Adeleye emphasized that when women are empowered, it leads to stronger communities, thriving households, and a more resilient society. She pointed out that during the first and second phases of the project, 430 ward facilitators were engaged to establish and strengthen Women Affinity Groups (WAGs) throughout the state. These groups have successfully formed 1,616 WAGs, which include 33,530 women beneficiaries.

Training and Transformation

The 33,530 women who have benefited from the program have undergone various training and re-training programs focused on financial education, business skills, and gender and life skills. Their experiences have led to positive changes in their livelihoods and the overall household dynamics.

Adeleye noted that testimonials from across the state highlight how the project has significantly transformed the lives of women and their families. The success of the initiative is evident in the growing number of women who are now active participants in the local economy.

Expanding the Reach

In the third phase, 150 newly engaged ward facilitators are expected to contribute to the formation of 770 Women Affinity Groups (WAGs). These groups will include 20,000 women beneficiaries across the Gateway State within the project’s timeframe.

This expansion underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that more women have access to the resources and support they need to thrive economically. The initiative continues to be a beacon of hope for women seeking to improve their lives and contribute to the growth of their communities.

Through these efforts, the Ogun State Government is not only addressing the challenges faced by women but also fostering an environment where they can achieve their full potential. The long-term vision is to create a sustainable impact that benefits not just individuals but the entire society.
