North Kerry Faces 40 Vacant Council Homes

Vacant Council-Owned Homes in Listowel Municipal District

Listowel Municipal District is currently facing a housing challenge, with nearly 40 vacant council-owned homes. This situation comes as several housing schemes are under construction across the district, aiming to address the growing demand for affordable housing.

The district covers a wide range of areas, including Listowel, Lixnaw, Abbeydorney, Causeway, Ballyduff, Ballybunion, Ballylongford, Tarbert, Moyvane, Duagh, and others. These communities are experiencing a mix of ongoing development and maintenance efforts to ensure that available housing meets the needs of residents.

Current Status of Council-Owned Homes

According to recent data, there are 17 council-owned homes that require repairs. Additionally, 14 dwellings are currently under repair and have been allocated to social housing applicants. However, five homes are also under repair but have not yet been assigned to any applicants. One repaired home is waiting for allocation, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and management of these properties.

These figures were discussed during the July meeting of the Listowel Municipal District, where the housing report provided an overview of the current state of housing in the area.

Ongoing Housing Schemes

Three housing schemes are currently being developed in the district, with progress on several projects already underway. Here’s a breakdown of the key developments:

  • The Sands in Ballybunion: Construction of seven three-bedroom homes began in October last year and is expected to be completed by April next year.

  • The Towers Centre in Ballybunion: Two two-bedroom apartments and 11 one-bedroom apartments are under construction. The project is anticipated to be completed by July 2027.

  • Main Street in Ballyheigue: Five homes, including two two-bedroom apartments and three three-bedroom units, are being built. Construction started in August 2022 and is set to be completed this September.

Future Developments

Further housing projects are planned in Abbeydorney and Lixnaw, with the following details:

  • Abbeydorney: Construction of two five-bedroom homes at numbers five and six on Bridge Road will begin in November. These homes are expected to be completed by November 2026.

  • Lixnaw: A single rural dwelling is being planned for Gortadrislig. Construction is scheduled to start in December and is expected to be finished within a year.

These developments reflect the commitment of local authorities to improve housing availability and meet the needs of residents in the Listowel Municipal District. As these projects progress, they will play a crucial role in addressing housing shortages and supporting community growth.
