Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) Takes a Strong Stance Against Illegal Activities in Logistics Sector
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has made it clear that it will not tolerate any involvement of courier companies in the trafficking of drugs and other illegal items through the country’s logistics network. This statement comes in response to recent media reports that have raised concerns about the ease with which hard drugs are being transported across Nigeria.
Addressing Misinformation
In a statement released by Franklin Alao, the director of Corporate Communications, NIPOST expressed strong disapproval of a report that claimed courier services were facilitating drug transportation since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office. The agency described the headline as false, misleading, and damaging to national security efforts. It emphasized that no official statement from NIPOST supports such claims and that the article falsely attributes the allegations to the postal regulator.
“This is categorically FALSE,” the statement read. “At no point has NIPOST made such a statement or associated these activities with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Commitment to Transparency and Accountability
While acknowledging the important role of the media in promoting accountability and transparency, NIPOST criticized the publication for its reckless and sensational approach. The agency warned that inaccurate reporting on sensitive issues like drug trafficking could mislead the public and undermine the collaborative efforts to clean up the courier and logistics sector.
NIPOST reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward the misuse of Nigeria’s postal infrastructure. It pledged to regulate the sector with integrity, transparency, and accountability.
Strengthening Surveillance and Enforcement
To address these concerns, NIPOST has initiated several interventions aimed at improving surveillance and enforcement within the logistics industry. These include:
- A revalidation process for all courier operators.
- Implementation of Know-Your-Customer protocols and compliance audits to tighten controls and prevent system abuse.
Additionally, the postal regulator is working closely with key agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Customs Service to investigate and deter the use of logistics channels for transporting narcotics and contraband.
Enhancing Sector Vigilance
NIPOST has also increased its engagement with courier operators, transport unions, and logistics associations to promote sector-wide vigilance. The goal is to encourage the reporting of suspicious packages and to foster a culture of responsibility among all stakeholders.
A new Digital Postcode and Parcel Identification System is being deployed nationwide to enhance traceability, eliminate anonymity, and improve parcel screening from the point of dispatch to final delivery.
Zero-Tolerance Policy
The Nigerian Postal Service has reiterated its commitment to restoring the integrity of the courier and logistics industry. Any operator found involved in criminal activity will face immediate regulatory sanctions, including license suspension or revocation, and will be reported to appropriate authorities for prosecution.
Public Awareness and Collaboration
NIPOST urges members of the public to use only licensed courier companies and to report any suspicious activity to either the agency or relevant security agencies. It also calls on journalists and civil society groups to approach issues in the sector with accuracy, caution, and a shared sense of responsibility.
By taking these steps, NIPOST aims to ensure that the logistics sector remains a safe and reliable part of Nigeria’s economy while actively combating the illicit activities that threaten national security.
