Nigerian Army’s Commitment to National Security and Democracy
The Chief of Army Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized the Nigerian Army’s unwavering stance against terrorism, describing these groups as “the enemies of peace and agents of chaos.” He stated that the army has successfully prevented these groups from disrupting the nation’s borders and undermining its stability.
General Oluyede, a Lieutenant-General, made these remarks during a briefing at Army Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. The event was aimed at informing Defence Correspondents about the upcoming Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2025 (NADCEL 2025). His speech highlighted the army’s ongoing efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and ensure national security.
A Strong Message Against Terrorism
During the briefing, General Oluyede underscored the importance of maintaining national sovereignty and preventing any external or internal threats from compromising the country’s integrity. He reiterated that the Nigerian Army will not hesitate to take action against those who seek to destabilize the nation.
He mentioned that recent months have seen an increase in terrorist activities, particularly along the borders, which have led to various internal security challenges. However, he expressed confidence in the army’s ability to counter these threats effectively.
“The Nigerian Army has risen to the occasion to deny these terrorists the opportunity to disrupt our socio-cultural heritage or smear the sanctity of our sovereignty,” he said. “In this vein, the Nigerian Army will not relent in its efforts to ensure the security of the Nigerian People and the perpetuity of our democracy.”
The Significance of Nigerian Army Day
The Nigerian Army Day Celebration, first held in 1978, is a significant event that commemorates the establishment of the Nigerian Army. It also marks the day when the first shot was fired at Garkem town in present-day Cross River State, symbolizing the beginning of the Civil War.
This year’s celebration, themed “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive,” aims to highlight the achievements of the army and foster collaboration with various stakeholders to enhance peace, security, and the defense of national values.
Honoring Heroes and Strengthening Bonds
General Oluyede also emphasized that NADCEL 2025 will serve as an opportunity to recognize and honor the heroic contributions of officers and soldiers, both past and present. This recognition is crucial in motivating current personnel and inspiring future generations to uphold the values of the Nigerian Army.
In addition to honoring heroes, the event will provide a platform for showcasing the army’s progress and capabilities. It will also allow for discussions on strategies to improve the effectiveness of the military in addressing emerging security challenges.
A Vision for the Future
As the Nigerian Army continues to evolve, it remains committed to its core mission of protecting the nation and its people. The army’s transformation drive is focused on developing soldiers to meet the demands of modern warfare and ensuring that they are well-equipped to handle any threat.
The upcoming celebrations will not only serve as a tribute to the past but also as a step towards a more secure and stable future for Nigeria. By strengthening partnerships with various stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, and international allies, the Nigerian Army aims to create a comprehensive approach to national security.
Through these efforts, the Nigerian Army reaffirms its dedication to upholding the principles of democracy, peace, and unity. As General Oluyede stated, the army will continue to work tirelessly to protect the nation from all forms of threats, ensuring that the legacy of bravery and sacrifice is carried forward by future generations.
