Ngugi wa Thiong’o: Beloved Literary Icon Passes Away at 87

Even though he faced imprisonment and banishment because of his critiques against the authoritarian regime in Kenya, he continued to be a prominent voice in African literature.

The distinguished Kenyan writer and scholar Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o passed away on Wednesday at the age of 87.

On Wednesday night, Wanjiku Wa Ngugi shared on Facebook that her father, the novelist, had passed away.

He expressed: “With profound sorrow, we inform you of the departure of our father, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, early Wednesday, May 28, 2025.”

She talked about her father’s heritage and final desire: “He led a fulfilling life and put up a great struggle. In line with his dying wish, let us honor his existence and contributions. Ria ratha na ria thua. Turi aira.”

She also suggested that the family’s representative, Nducu Wa Ngugi, will provide information about the plans for his memorial service shortly.


Ngugi, the literary icon

Born on January 5, 1938, Ngugi has written numerous works including books, novels, plays, short stories, and essays. Some of his notable writings include ‘Weep Not Child,’ ‘The River Between,’ ‘Petals of Blood,’ and ‘Wizard of the Crow.’

He gained fame not only for his distinctive writing style but also for his contributions to children’s literature and his outspoken critique of societal chaos. He was recognized as the foremost novelist in East Africa.

He founded and edited Mutiri, a Gikuyu journal. His short story, ‘The Upright Revolution: Or Why Humans Walk Upright’, was translated into 100 languages and sold worldwide.
