New Record: Russia Launches 728 Drones, 13 Missiles on Ukraine Overnight

Overview of the Aerial Attack on Ukraine

On the night of July 9, a significant aerial attack was launched against Ukraine by Russian forces. According to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force, a total of 741 aerial targets were deployed during this operation. These included 728 UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and various other types of drones, along with several cruise and ballistic missiles.

The attack involved multiple launch points from different regions in Russia. Specifically, the following weapons were used:

  • 728 Shahed UAVs and decoy drones were launched from areas including Bryansk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Kursk, Oryol, and Millerovo.
  • Seven Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles were fired from the Engels area in the Saratov region and the Kursk region.
  • Six Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles were launched from the airspace over the Lipetsk region.

The primary target of the attack was the city of Lutsk, which experienced one of the most intense drone and missile strikes in recent history. As a result, fires broke out in the city, causing significant damage and concern among residents.

Air Defense Efforts

Ukraine’s military forces quickly responded to the attack, utilizing a variety of defense mechanisms:

  • Aviation units were deployed to intercept incoming threats.
  • Anti-aircraft missile troops worked to neutralize enemy aircraft and missiles.
  • Electronic warfare and drone warfare units played a crucial role in disrupting enemy communications and targeting systems.
  • Mobile fire groups from Ukraine’s Defense Forces were also engaged in defending key locations.

These coordinated efforts contributed to the successful interception of a large number of aerial threats.

Results of the Attack and Defense

By 8:30 a.m. Kyiv time, preliminary data indicated that Ukraine’s air defense system had successfully eliminated 718 Russian aerial attack assets. The breakdown of these eliminations includes:

  • 303 targets destroyed by firepower, consisting of 296 drones and 7 Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles.
  • 415 targets lost through jamming, effectively disabling them without direct engagement.
  • Hits by enemy aerial targets were recorded in four locations, while debris from downed targets fell in 14 different areas.

Despite the intensity of the attack, Ukraine’s air defense capabilities demonstrated resilience and effectiveness in countering the threat.

Impact on Ukrainian Cities

The overnight attack on July 9 had a significant impact on several cities across Ukraine. While the main focus of the assault was western Ukraine, particularly the city of Lutsk, other regions were also affected.

In Kyiv, explosions were heard as part of the broader attack, indicating that the capital was not spared from the aggression. Additionally, the Brovary district within the Kyiv region was targeted, highlighting the strategic intent behind the attack.

The attacks underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine in defending its territory against persistent aerial threats. The coordination between various military units and the use of advanced technology have been critical in mitigating the damage caused by such attacks.

As the situation continues to evolve, the Ukrainian military remains vigilant and prepared to respond to any further aggression from Russian forces. The resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people and their armed forces continue to be a vital factor in the ongoing conflict.
