GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – A new aircraft is being built in Gulfport, and most of the people building it can’t even drive yet.
The plane project is part of the Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum summer camps.
The camps allow youth to get hands-on experience in the aviation industry with activities like flight simulation, flying drones and welding.
“It’s such an eye-opening experience for so many reasons. It’s behind the mechanics behind flying, why stuff flies and when I first came here, I was like, you know, flying is cool and this and that, but now, I know how it works and why we do the things we do and how safe it really is. At this age, the kids are malleable; they’re not stuck on one thing, they’re open, they are willing to learn, they’re not going to be stubborn. They’re going to want to learn and they want to sit down and take the time and understand it,” teacher and former camper Logan Spain said.
Campers are busy building a Zenith CH107, a two-seat experimental aircraft.
Each camp group does some of the work, and there’s still room to participate.
Museum visitors will also be able to have a hand in the project when camp is not in session.
