LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning the public of scammers impersonating staffers from her office by spoofing caller ID.
According to Nessel, the scammers are using spoofing technology to have the recipient’s caller ID identify the scammer as the “Consumer Protection Division,” in an attempt to impersonate the legitimate Consumer Protection Team, using a real phone number connected with the department to do so.
The scammers tell victims that their information was “flagged” with credit agencies, and if they don’t make an immediate payment, their credit cards and banking accounts will be shut down.
Nessel says the Department of Attorney General will never call you in this way.
“This scam is alarming and designed to manipulate consumers into making hasty, costly decisions,” Nessel said. “My office does not call consumers to demand money, charge fees to resolve ‘flagged accounts,’ or negotiate credit card debt over the phone.”
If you think you have received a scam call, Nessel encourages you to contact her office directly at (513) 335-7599 or file a complaint online at
