The Nigerian Communications Commission has launched an ambitious e-Health Project at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, Ondo State, marking a bold step towards integrating digital technology into Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The initiative, unveiled recently, aims to transform medical service delivery and bolster the country’s digital economy, according to an email statement from the NCC.
Speaking at the commissioning, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida, underscored the project’s significance in leveraging information and communication technology to enhance healthcare access and efficiency.
“This e-Health Project attests to our collective efforts to harness ICT to revolutionise the health sector in a manner that better serves citizens,” Maida said, highlighting the dual role of ICT in integrating healthcare into the digital economy and enabling healthier citizens to contribute to national growth.
The Akure initiative equips the hospital with advanced technology to streamline medical processes, improve patient care, and manage health records efficiently.
The NCC expects the project to deliver timely diagnoses, better treatment plans, and improved follow-up care, driving patient satisfaction and health outcomes. Beyond the hospital, the project sets a blueprint for nationwide adoption of digital healthcare solutions, particularly in underserved regions.
Maida attributed the project’s success to collaboration with technology experts and the Ondo State government, describing it as a scalable model for other regions.
“The benefits of this project extend beyond these hospital walls to the larger community,” he noted, reaffirming NCC’s commitment to partnerships that expand ICT’s role in healthcare.
The launch comes as Nigeria seeks to bridge gaps in healthcare access through digital innovation. Stakeholders, including government officials and tech partners, were praised for their contributions.
“Your dedication and expertise have brought this vision to life,” Maida said, signalling NCC’s intent to drive further progress through such collaborations.
