NBME Launches Fee Aid Expansion for Med Students, Applications Due Aug 24

PHILADELPHIA, PA — NBMEis currently taking applications for the upcoming round of its financial aid program, which is included in a $1 million yearly pledge to assist medical students experiencing financial difficulties. Applications are available until August 24, 2025.

Introduced in 2024, the initiative is designed to reduce the financial strain associated with taking the USMLE® Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge exams. Every year, more than 1,300 students are awarded support. Significantly, 41% of last year’s awardees were the first in their families to pursue higher education, highlighting the program’s impact on increasing opportunities in the medical field.

We are convinced that every student aspiring to become a doctor should have the opportunity to pursue that goal, no matter their financial situation,” stated Peter Katsufrakis, President and CEO of NBME. “Although the USMLE exams are just steps in a future physician’s educational path, we hope these financial contributions will make the journey easier for talented students following their passion.

NBME collaborates with the National Medical Fellowships (NMF) to manage the program. There are three application periods planned during 2025, providing several chances for students to seek assistance.

We are excited to collaborate once more with NBME to offer the financial assistance needed for outstanding medical students to keep advancing their education and careers,” said Michellene Davis, Esq., President and CEO of NMF. “By supporting health professionals who are dedicated to community-focused healthcare, NMF aims to guarantee that all individuals receive the best possible care.
