NATO Responds to Heaviest Russian Strikes on Ukraine
NATO scrambled its warplanes overnight following the most intense attacks on Ukraine since the conflict with Russia began in 2023. The assault, which targeted Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, involved 741 hypersonic missiles and kamikaze drones, marking the largest single-night strike of the war so far.

Major Targets and Emergency Response
Lutsk and Ternopil in western Ukraine were among the hardest-hit areas. These strikes prompted an emergency response from NATO forces stationed in neighboring Poland. A statement from the Polish armed forces command confirmed that Polish and allied aviation had begun operating within Polish airspace in response to the attack.
In addition to the city-level strikes, warehouses in the Kyiv region were hit by Russian drones and missiles, leading to fires in several buildings. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that while Lutsk was the most severely affected, damage was also reported across ten other regions.
Air Defense Success and Military Efforts
Zelensky emphasized that the majority of the incoming strikes were intercepted. He noted the use of interceptor drones and mobile fire groups, both of which contributed to the successful defense. “There are dozens of hits, and we are scaling up the technology,” he said, expressing gratitude to the soldiers for their precision.

He described the attack as a “demonstrative” move, occurring at a time when peace efforts have been ongoing but repeatedly rejected by Russia. This statement came just hours after former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Vladimir Putin’s actions, calling them “bulls***,” as peace talks stalled.
Shift in U.S. Policy
Trump also reversed his previous stance, pledging to resume sending weapons to Ukraine after the country faced heavy missile and drone strikes. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, the vast majority of the incoming attacks were neutralized. They reported that 303 missiles were destroyed, while 415 were misfired or lost due to electronic warfare.
The air attack was repelled through coordinated efforts involving aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups.
Lutsk Faces Worst Attack
Lutsk experienced its most significant attack of the war, including the use of Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. Mayor Ihor Polishchuk described the attack as the most extensive using UAVs and missiles. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties at the time of the attack. He expressed gratitude to the Air Defence Forces for their role in protecting the city.
Sanctions and Pressure on Russia
Zelensky reiterated his belief that only the toughest sanctions would compel Russia to take ceasefire and peace talks seriously. He called for painful sanctions against oil exports that have funded the war for over three years, along with secondary sanctions against those who buy this oil and support the conflict.
He urged Western partners to apply pressure on Russia to end the war rather than continue with new attacks. “Anyone who wants peace must act,” he stated.
Limited Ukrainian Counterstrikes
Ukraine also launched limited counterstrikes against Russia, temporarily closing Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports in Moscow. Military targets in the Kursk border region were hit, with Russia reporting two women injured in the attacks.
As the conflict continues, the situation remains tense, with both sides engaging in military actions and diplomatic efforts to find a resolution.
