NADDC Trains Ekiti Technicians to Repair PMS and CNG Tricycles

Training Programme for Tricycle and Motorcycle Technicians in Ekiti State

A five-day training programme has been launched in Ekiti State to equip technicians with the necessary skills for the repair and maintenance of petrol- and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles and motorcycles. The initiative, organized by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) in collaboration with the Simba Group, is taking place at the NADDC Training Center on Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti.

The event has attracted over 50 participants from all 16 local government areas of Ekiti State. This training marks a significant step towards improving the technical capabilities of mechanics and ensuring that they are well-prepared to handle the growing demand for CNG-powered vehicles.

Key Objectives of the Training

The Director General and CEO of NADDC, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, highlighted that the primary goal of the programme is to provide technicians with the knowledge required to maintain and repair both petrol and CNG-powered vehicles. He emphasized the increasing popularity of CNG vehicles across Nigeria due to their cost-effectiveness compared to traditional petrol-powered options.

Osanipin also pointed out that the initiative aims to build public confidence in the use of CNG vehicles, which are seen as a more sustainable and efficient alternative for transportation. He encouraged Nigerians to embrace this shift, noting that it could lead to a more environmentally friendly and economically viable transport system.

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges

One of the key concerns raised during the event was the limited availability of CNG infrastructure in Ekiti State. However, Osanipin assured attendees that two gas filling stations are currently under construction and are expected to be operational soon. This development is anticipated to significantly improve access to CNG and encourage wider adoption of these vehicles.

In addition to infrastructure development, Osanipin praised the efforts of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration in supporting artisans and reducing unemployment through skill development initiatives. He noted that such programmes have played a crucial role in empowering individuals and fostering economic growth.

Expanding the Initiative Nationwide

The training programme is not just a local effort but part of a broader national strategy. Osanipin announced that the initiative will be rolled out to other states, including Kano, Kaduna, Owerri, and Benin, as part of a nationwide effort to support the millions of Nigerians who rely on tricycles and motorcycles for their daily livelihoods.

He stressed that for those whose income depends on these vehicles, acquiring technical expertise is essential. Therefore, the programme is designed to train not only automobile mechanics but also tricycle and motorcycle technicians, ensuring a comprehensive approach to skill development.

Supporting Economic Growth

Ekiti State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Empowerment, Kayode Fasae, described the training as a milestone in the state’s efforts to upskill its workforce. He emphasized that the programme aligns with the state’s broader goals of job creation, wealth generation, and economic development.

Fasae reiterated the administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and human capital development, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in driving progress and achieving the six-point development agenda.

Partnerships and Industry Support

The Regional Manager of Simba Group Nigeria, Sumit Panda, expressed the company’s long-term commitment to the success of the initiative. He highlighted the importance of partnerships between industry stakeholders and government bodies in promoting sustainable development and technological advancement.

Ifa Akinola, Chairman of the Tricycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (TORAN), commended the NADDC for organizing the training programme. He assured that members of the association would actively participate in adopting CNG-powered tricycles, recognizing the potential benefits for their businesses.

This initiative represents a critical step toward modernizing Nigeria’s transportation sector and creating opportunities for skilled workers across the country. As the programme expands, it is expected to contribute significantly to economic growth and environmental sustainability.
