Muturi Challenges Raila’s 5-Acre Land Gift for Affordable Housing: “Show Me the Deed”

  • The former Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Julius Muturi challenged President William Ruto’s assertion that Raila Odinga gave five acres of land in Kisumu for low-cost housing purposes.

  • Muturi charged that the Kenya Kwanza administration was employing the Affordable Housing Programme as a cover for embezzlement.

  • The ex-Attorney General cautioned that Ruto’s drive for housing reforms is primarily motivated by personal benefits rather than the welfare of the general populace.

  • He pledged that should they win the election in 2027, the opposition would reclaim wealth alleged to have been stolen, stating that President Ruto’s administration would mark the beginning of holding individuals accountable.

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has dismissed President William Ruto’s assertions that ODM leader Raila Odinga gave up five acres from his family land in Kisumu for the Affordable Housing Program.

His comments were made only one day after Ruto, during his address to Kisumu residents, highly praised Raila for providing land to enable the development of 750 affordable housing units.

The president characterized the act as an emblem of solidarity and proof of the ex-prime minister’s dedication to enhancing people’s livelihoods in the area.

Why did Muturi express skepticism about Raila’s contribution?

At a political gathering in Machakos County on Friday, May 30, Muturi publicly challenged the legitimacy of the donation.

Muturi charged that the Kenya Kwanza government was employing the housing initiative as a cover for corrupt activities, diverting state money.

The ex-Attorney General challenged the authorities to release the title deed so as to confirm Raila’s supposed involvement.

“Let me give you a small warning, whenever you hear William Ruto pushing for something very hard, just know he’s looking out for his own pocket. Do you understand me? Just yesterday, he himself claimed that Raila Odinga donated five acres to the government. Really? Raila gave away five acres? Then let’s say this to William Ruto: since we know you, show us the title deed for those five acres,” he stated.

However, Muturi, who was formerly the Speaker of the National Assembly, is not convinced by the housing initiative.

He proposed that the entire situation was merely a distraction from the illegal diversion of public money, implicating Deputy President Kithure Kindiki for supposedly distributing the ill-gotten wealth.

“As some individuals have pointed out, it’s these housing funds that Ruto has begun to pilfer,”Muturi stated.

In what way will the opposition ensure accountability from Ruto?

Ruto’s key initiative, the Affordable Housing Programme, has garnered both acclaim and intense criticism following its launch.

Muturi went beyond contesting the land deal; he also delivered a strong caution to the president.

The previous Cabinet Secretary assured that Ruto’s government will face accountability if the opposition emerges victorious in the 2027 General Election.

“We have arrived. The government that is taking over aims to guarantee that all the riches of Kenya which were misappropriated are restored to the citizens. It needs to be unequivocally stated: nobody will be allowed to get away with plundering the Republic of Kenya through electoral processes again, and this call for responsibility starts with Ruto’s administration,” Muturi proclaimed.

How many individuals received homes in Mukuru?

On Tuesday, May 20, Ruto transferred ownership of 1,080 affordable housing units to the inhabitants of Mukuru, which is one of Nairobi’s biggest slum areas.

He characterized the event as the biggest landmark in his political career.

Ruto mentioned that this effort is a component of an extensive strategy aimed at tackling substandard living situations, encompassing issues like congestion, safety concerns, and the absence of essential facilities.

He declared that the New Mukuru Housing Estate would ultimately include 13,248 units, establishing it as Kenya’s biggest real estate project.
