Darlington Chigumbu, the BUDIRIRO South Member of Parliament, has joined forces with the Australian Embassy to create a multifunctional sports complex designed to combat substance misuse and harness the talents of young locals.
At the groundbreaking event in Harare’s Budiriro district on Monday, Chigumbu stated that this program aims to create chances for local youth and divert them from engaging with drugs and substance misuse.
Our aim is to construct a versatile world-class sports complex capable of accommodating various athletic activities.
We are taking this step due to observing numerous young individuals involved in drug and substance misuse.
“We’ve noticed that we have considerable talent going to waste due to the lack of resources to present these talents with opportunities. Therefore, we aim to address this issue for the youth within our community,” stated Chigumbu.
The lawmaker stated that some of the funds for the initiative will be sourced from Australian citizens and Zimbabweans residing in Australia since the Constituency Development Fund alone is insufficient.
The Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Zimbabwe, Isaac Matia, who was present at the event, expressed his commitment to supporting the residents of Budiriro.
Australia thinks that inclusive sports have the potential to bring together the citizens of both Australia and Zimbabwe, fostering collaboration and comprehension, thereby making everything achievable.
The governments of Australia and Zimbabwe concur that this is a resource we should utilize to strengthen their bilateral relations.
He stated, ‘Our purpose is to provide support to both you and your community.’
The mayor of Harare, Jacob Mafume, cautioned against occupying public spaces unlawfully, emphasizing that any buildings erected on lands allocated for sporting purposes will face demolition.
