A Day in the Life of a Mock Trial at Southwest High School and Law Academy
On a Friday morning, the atmosphere was electric at Southwest High School and Law Academy as the court was in session. This time, however, it wasn’t for a real legal case—it was for the third annual Law Camp mock trial. The event brought together 13 rising freshmen who had spent the past two weeks immersed in the world of law, learning not only about courtroom procedures but also developing essential life skills.
The camp, designed to prepare students for future academic and professional challenges, offered an immersive experience that combined education with hands-on learning. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of courtroom etiquette, from how to address judges and attorneys to understanding the roles of different participants in a trial. They also engaged in various activities aimed at building confidence, communication skills, and teamwork—essential qualities for any aspiring legal professional.
This year’s group included some of the most promising incoming freshmen, many of whom are already recognized as leaders within their school community. These students were not just passive participants; they played active roles in shaping the camp experience. Some even took on responsibilities such as organizing events, leading discussions, and mentoring younger students.
One of the student leaders, rising junior Izabella Rivers, shared her personal journey with the program. She described how joining Law Camp was like finding a second home.
