Missouri First Responders Return After Two Weeks Aid in Texas Floods

MISSOURI (KFVS) – Welcome signs and warm embraces greeted Missouri Task Force 1 on Wednesday morning as they returned from a mission in central Texas.

A group of 80 individuals was deployed to Kerr County, Texas, to assist with search and rescue operations after severe flooding occurred in early July. The team remained for approximately two weeks, collaborating with additional groups from across the nation along with thousands of local volunteers.

Severe flash floods claimed over 100 lives in Kerr County, including numerous children who were at a sleepaway camp called Camp Mystic. Texas officials continue to search for two individuals who are still missing.

It’s evident from the “Kerr County Strong” bumper stickers on all Task Force vehicles and the green ribbons worn by every returning first responder that this mission will remain with the group.

Branson Firefighter and Missouri Task Force 1 member Billy Wayne Kepford drew parallels between the destruction and Hurricane Helene, yet noted that the town of Texas offered assistance in a manner he had never witnessed before.

“There are many kind-hearted individuals in Texas, and you truly witnessed that when you were working with the community, as everyone was out there offering assistance,” Kepford said.

Terry Cassil, along with Missouri Task Force 1 and the State Emergency Management Agency, became emotional when reflecting on the children who perished due to the flooding.

“We did our utmost to assist them in finding resolution under these circumstances, as we would hope for our own families if it were us,” Cassil stated.
