Expanding Access to Higher Education Through Free Dual Credit Classes
Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) has taken a significant step toward making higher education more accessible by eliminating tuition fees for dual credit classes. This change, which went into effect this fall, allows students to earn college credits while still enrolled in high school without any financial burden.
Kayla Thurman, the director of Early Entry and Program Development at MPCC, emphasized the importance of this shift. “Any student who was in the class previously who may have thought there were some financial barriers or may have decided to pass on a class, now they have the opportunity to take that course for no charge,” she said. This move is intended to remove obstacles that might have prevented students from pursuing college-level coursework during their high school years.
Dual credit classes are designed to mirror the academic rigor of traditional college courses. These classes can be taken at a student’s high school, but they follow the same curriculum and standards as those offered on campus. “A student who chooses to take dual credit in high school is really just getting a foot in the door to their college experience,” Thurman explained. “It’s the same class that they would receive here if they were on campus.”
The availability of free dual credit courses opens up new opportunities for students to start their college journey early. This initiative not only helps reduce the financial strain on families but also encourages students to explore academic interests and gain valuable experience before entering college. “Before, there was a charge for all of our early entry courses, that was a huge difference. Now, with that removed, we’re hoping to really level the playing field so that students no matter what, if they have interest, are able to take those courses,” Thurman said.
Students have multiple options for enrolling in dual credit classes. They can attend sessions at their high school, participate in online courses, or even take classes on MPCC’s campus. This flexibility ensures that students from different backgrounds and locations can benefit from the program.
Thurman believes the timing is ideal for students to begin exploring their educational paths. “Now is the time for high school students to start early and begin their college education, especially now that dual credit classes are free,” she added. By taking advantage of these opportunities, students can save money on tuition costs and potentially graduate from college with fewer requirements.
For those interested in learning more about the available dual credit classes, additional information is available through MPCC’s resources. Students and parents can explore the options that best fit their academic goals and schedules.
This initiative reflects MPCC’s commitment to providing equitable access to higher education. By removing financial barriers and offering flexible learning environments, the college is helping students build a strong foundation for future success.
