The game began with the United States taking an early lead. In the fourth minute, Chris Richards scored a stunning goal after rising highest to meet Sebastian Berhalter’s free-kick. His powerful header struck the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line, much to the delight of the American fans.
However, Mexico quickly responded. In the 27th minute, Raul Jimenez equalized with a sharp finish into the roof of the net following a clever reverse pass from Marcel Ruiz. The Fulham striker celebrated the goal with a heartfelt tribute to his former Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate, Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car accident earlier in the week. Jimenez held up a Mexico jersey bearing Jota’s name and number as he sat on the pitch, showing deep respect for his late friend.
The equalizer energized the Mexican team, who took control of the match for large portions. Roberto Alvarado and 16-year-old Gilberto Mora both created chances that forced strong saves from U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese. Meanwhile, the Americans remained a threat on the counter, with Malik Tillman and Berhalter combining effectively in midfield.

In the 77th minute, Edson Alvarez provided the breakthrough that Mexico had been striving for. The West Ham United defender scored with a diving header, which initially was ruled out for offside. However, a VAR review confirmed that Alvarez had timed his run perfectly, leading to a dramatic celebration among the Mexican supporters.
“I’m speechless,” Alvarez said after the match. “We spent 35 days in intense training, away from our families, with the intention of winning. There’s certainly room for improvement, but we’re leaving happy and with our feet firmly on the ground.”
The final moments were tense as the United States pushed for an equalizer. Substitute Patrick Agyemang had a golden chance in the dying minutes, but his shot drifted agonizingly wide, allowing Mexico to hold firm and claim the trophy once again.
This victory secures back-to-back Gold Cup titles for Mexico, further solidifying their dominance in the region. It also adds to their three CONCACAF Nations Championships, which were the tournament’s predecessor.
“We came from behind and are leaving with the title,” said Jimenez. “It’s great and really important to clinch the crown a summer before the World Cup. It’s something we’ve been trying to do since the tournament began.”
The 2025 edition of the Gold Cup featured 16 teams, including guest nation Saudi Arabia. All matches were held in the United States except for one, which took place in Vancouver, Canada.
