Mets’ Five-Run Fifth Seals Victory Over Angels

Mets’ Five-Run Fifth Seals Victory Over Angels

Francisco Alvarez hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the fifth inning, and Brandon Nimmo followed with an RBI single two batters later, helping the New York Mets, who were playing at home, secure another come-from-behind victory over the Los Angeles Angels with a 3-2 win on Tuesday.

The Mets have secured three consecutive victories, each time making a late comeback, and they aim to complete a sweep of the three-game interleague matchup on Wednesday. The Angels suffered their third loss in the past four games.

Jorge Soler from Los Angeles hit a home run in the second inning against Frankie Montas (3-1). Nolan Schanuel’s RBI double along the first base line in the fifth inning put the Angels ahead 2-0, but the Mets staged a two-out rally against Kyle Hendricks (5-7) in the bottom of the same inning.

Brett Baty hit a double, and Alvarez, who is playing his second game since being moved up from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, hit a home run to left field seven pitches later. This was Alvarez’s fourth home run of the season and his first at home.

Ronny Mauricio reached base on a single off Hendricks’ following pitch, advanced to second by stealing, and crossed home on Nimmo’s hit.

The rally positioned Montas for a victory. The right-handed pitcher, who made his fifth start following a significant absence in the first half due to a lat injury, allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

New York’s relief pitchers Rico Garcia and Reed Garrett pitched a total of 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Ryne Stanek gave up singles to Logan O’Hoppe and Schanuel in the ninth inning but secured his third save of the season — and his second in the last three games — by getting Mike Trout to ground out to first baseman Pete Alonso.

Schanuel concluded with a career-best four hits. He came into Tuesday having recorded 17 games with three hits.

O’Hoppe had a 3-out-of-4 performance, while Luis Rengifo, who batted in the ninth position, concluded with a 2-out-of-5 record.

Hendricks gave up three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out two batters in 4 2/3 innings. He got 13 of the first 15 hitters out before Baty’s double.
