The 14-year-old youth from Chesterfield is the creator ofMH BoxesWith the assistance of her mother, Carissa, she stocks the boxes with materials for girls aged 6 to 16 to help them navigate difficult times caused by mental health issues.
Her recovery process fuels her purpose. Mila shares with 12 On Your Side that several years ago, she faced severe anxiety and depression.
At a certain time, her school counselor intervened to inform her parents.
“If the school hadn’t contacted me, we wouldn’t have found out, because the day the school called, she got off the bus with a smile on her face,” said Mila’s mother, Carissa Henry.
Carissa informed me that she reached out to thecrisis hotlineAfter multiple visits to physicians, her family had to make a difficult choice to admit Mila to a residential treatment center in order for her to receive the necessary support.
At first, we were upset,” Carissa said. “She didn’t want to leave, I didn’t want her to go, my husband was at home with other children, like is this really going to happen. By the end, she was really glad she went.
Mila discovered her group of people and the motivation to positively impact others’ lives.
Now she stocks boxes with items such as journals, different fidget toys, and pastimes.
Within two years, she has distributed almost 2,000 MH Boxes.
“I just received these bags from Thrive Cosmetics; they’re for the girls to store their smaller fidget toys so they can take them wherever they go,” Mila said.
“Peer support is incredibly important, and MH Boxes is delivering that assistance to individuals,” said Carissa.
Several prominent figures in the entertainment field acknowledge Mila’s dedication.
Last week, Mila was honored with the Youth Humanitarian Award in New York by the Pete & Thomas Foundation, established by Grammy-winning artist Megan Thee Stallion. Megan was present in the front row, supporting her enthusiastically.
I feel as if speaking with Megan motivated me to keep going with my mission,” Mila stated. “I spoke with many individuals who offered their congratulations, which helped boost my confidence.
