Martin University unveils college prep and leadership initiative

Introducing the NextGen Leaders Fellowship

Martin University in Indianapolis has launched a new initiative aimed at empowering young Black men in the city. The program, called the NextGen Leaders Fellowship, is designed to help students develop leadership skills and prepare for life after high school. This yearlong program will support 32 Black male juniors and seniors from Indianapolis high schools through a combination of in-person and virtual sessions, as well as volunteer events. Importantly, the fellowship is completely free for all participants.

Program Structure and Benefits

Participants in the NextGen Leaders Fellowship will have the opportunity to learn essential skills such as public speaking, communication, and team building. In addition to these core competencies, students will receive mentorship and assistance with college applications and career planning. The goal is to provide a comprehensive support system that helps students navigate their educational and professional paths effectively.

Partnerships with Black Fraternities

One of the key elements of the program is its collaboration with four prominent Black fraternities from the Divine Nine: Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma. These organizations will play a vital role in supporting students through college readiness initiatives and mentoring programs. Their involvement ensures that participants gain access to experienced leaders who can guide them through the challenges of higher education and beyond.

Information Sessions for Interested Students

For those interested in learning more about the program, there are two upcoming information sessions available. The first is an in-person event scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 26 at Martin University, located at 2186 N. Sherman Dr. A second session will be held virtually from 7 to 8 p.m. on July 29, allowing students and families to participate from the comfort of their homes.

Application Process and Timeline

The deadline to apply for the NextGen Leaders Fellowship is August 1. Once accepted, the program will begin later that month on August 23. Students interested in joining can apply for free by filling out the online application form.
