Martin Triumphs Over Ex-Mayor Rich David in GOP Primary for Broome County Clerk

TOWN OF DICKINSON (WIVT/WBGH) – Local Republicans have chosen a current clerk over a former mayor to be their candidate for Broome County Clerk.

Broome County Legislature Clerk Aaron Martin defeated former Binghamton Mayor Rich David in the GOP primary yesterday by a vote of 2,371 to 1,989, a roughly 400 vote difference.

Martin, who lives in Vestal, has been the clerk of the Broome County Legislature for the past 14 years and previously served as the Chairman of the county Conservative Party, a position he resigned from when he announced his candidacy for county clerk.

In all, Martin has 27 years of public service and, while he’s been active in party organizing, this was his first run for elected office. He says he’s humbled and grateful.

“I’m humbled and grateful for the opportunity to run for office. Not because I’ve been running for office over and over for the past two decades. Not because I’ve been scheming to run for office. I’ve just been doing the job for the past 14 years as the Clerk of the County Legislature. And I’m excited about the opportunity to continue to meet voters over the next few months,” he said.

Rich David issued a statement thanking all of his supporters, congratulating Martin and wishing him well. In the general election, Martin will face the son of the man who gave him his start in local politics.

Democrats have nominated Nick Libous, son of the late Republican State Senator Tom Libous.

Martin initially moved to Greater Binghamton to work for Tom Libous.
