Man Donates Kidney to Girl, 11 – After Losing His Own Daughter

A Heartfelt Act of Love and Sacrifice

A father has shown incredible bravery by donating his kidney to save the life of an 11-year-old girl, a gesture that echoes the memory of his own daughter who passed away years ago. Andy Emmott, 55, made the decision without hesitation when he learned about the urgent need for a kidney transplant for a young girl named Amber. For Andy, this act is deeply personal, as it reminds him of his late daughter Sarah, who also fought a long battle for a life-saving organ.

Sarah, who was only eight years old when she passed away, had been living with congenital nephrotic syndrome and other complex health issues since birth. She spent much of her life in hospitals, including Leeds General Infirmary and Martin House Hospice. Despite her struggles, Sarah remained strong and resilient, and her family tirelessly campaigned for a kidney transplant. Her efforts eventually led to a successful transplant, but tragically, she passed away exactly 364 days after receiving the organ.

Andy’s decision to donate his kidney came from a place of deep empathy and gratitude. He explained, “I donated a kidney because a kind stranger donated one to my daughter.” When he saw the appeal for Amber, he noticed many similarities between her and Sarah, which compelled him to step forward. Fortunately, he turned out to be a perfect match.

Now in recovery, Andy has returned to his job at Northern Powergrid, though he is currently limited to office duties until fully healed. His manager, Amanda White, expressed her admiration for his selfless act. She said, “I am scared stiff to donate blood, so to donate a kidney is amazing.” Amanda shared how visiting Andy during his recovery revealed the profound impact Sarah had on his life. “Her presence is everywhere—photo after photo,” she said. “What is obvious is how loved she is and how happy she was despite everything she was going through.”

Andy continues to support Theodora Children’s Charity, a cause close to his heart. Since Sarah’s diagnosis, he has worked hard to raise funds for the charity, which provided comfort and joy to his daughter during her hospital stays. “They bought so much joy and laughter to her and were a great distraction for her,” he said. He emphasized that the charity is small and often overlooked compared to larger organizations, making every donation crucial.

Andy’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have, not just through their actions, but through the love and compassion they carry. His journey highlights the importance of kindness, resilience, and the enduring bond between parents and their children. As he continues to recover, his hope is that his gift will give Amber a chance to live a full and healthy life, just as his daughter once did.
