Mark and Penny Metcalfe, who run Metcalfe Florist & Pleasant View Greenhouses in Madisonville, are currently being considered for the prestigious Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Farmer of the Year award. Their journey reflects not only a deep love for the land but also a commitment to family, sustainability, and giving back.
A Family Business with Deep Roots
The Metcalfe family business has been thriving for over a century, with roots that stretch back 121 years. It was started by Mark’s grandfather, and the legacy continues today through the couple’s efforts. The 100-acre property includes a greenhouse, gardens, and landscaping, offering a variety of plants and services to the local community.
“We’re fortunate to have a community that has supported us that long,” Mark said. “We’ve had a lot of mouths, we’ve been given the opportunity to be with people, and people have been with us.”
Mark has been involved in the farm since he was just 10 years old, and his wife, Penny, joined him 15 years ago. Together, they have built a business that not only serves customers but also supports other farmers in the area.
Planning Ahead and Supporting Others
One of the key factors behind their success is forward-thinking planning. The couple grows mums for the fall season and poinsettias for the winter, but they also play an essential role in helping other farmers. Recently, they harvested hay, which is distributed to local farmers to feed their livestock.
Rather than seeing other farmers as competitors, the Metcalfes view them as part of a larger agricultural family. “We feel like it is a labor of love, it’s something that we enjoy doing, and it’s something that we love to be a part of,” Penny shared.

“That’s what I like to do, share and give back,” Mark said. “It’s not all about me, it’s not all about us, it’s about everybody, and being able to do that with a good group of people is always fun.”
