At the 17th edition of The Headies, it was contended that although global awards are admired, they often fail to give priority to Nigerian or African talents.
“Although winning at the Grammys and other global accolades feels great, as a Nigerian, you can never be prioritized in arenas that aren’t yours,” he stated.
Tems created one of the most stunning R&B albums last year, yet they awarded her with the Best African Music Performance category. Why isn’t she included in the R&B, pop, or Best Female categories? It seems like they favor their own.
He went on to state that genuine advancement would involve raising The Headies to an international scale, where artists from around the world come to Nigeria to accept accolades.
What would benefit me as a Nigerian artist is for The Headies to become so prestigious that American musicians start winning awards and travel to Nigeria to collect them. There’s nothing gained from the Grammys overshadowing The Headies. However, everybody benefits if The Headies grow in stature.
Lojay stressed his confidence in Nigeria and the worldwide prospects of its music sector.
I am confident that Nigeria can be superior, more robust, and enable its citizens to thrive internationally. Therefore, we shouldn’t underestimate the value of our own resources.
