Local Theater Scene Thrives After Reopening

PARSONS, Kan. — It’s been a week since a community movie theater reopened to the public.

The Parsons Theatre reopened its doors last Thursday with a busy start. Since then, roughly 1,200 guests have come for shows.

RR Entertainment CEO and Parsons Theatre operator Rob Mayer says a combination of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Writers Strike led to a decline in business, forcing the doors to close.

  • Local theatre booming after reopening
  • Kansas man had nearly 2,200 child sex videos and images, feds say
  • Burglary suspect accused of drug possession and kidnapping an infant
  • Floodwaters help end southeast Kansas pursuit with reckless driver, police say
  • Parsons hit-and-run suspect arrested after surrendering

But now it’s back up and running – even hosting a kids movie series starting June 30.

“For us, it’s all about, you know, delivering, you know, something that they can’t get at home. We’ve got the big sound. We’ve got the big picture, you know, nice, bright screens, nice, comfortable auditoriums. So that’s really what we’re here to do. And we’re really here to give people a good time and and let them come back and get that again and again,” said Rob Mayer, RT entertainment CEO and Parsons Theatre operator.

The theatre itself has quite a history. Construction originally started in the late 90’s before a fire destroyed the structure.

It was rebuilt before being damaged in the 2000 Parsons tornado.
