Empowering the Youth for a Brighter Future
At a recent event in Accra, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, emphasized the importance of creating systems that allow the youth to take control of their lives. Her remarks were delivered during the World Population Day celebration, where she highlighted the need for more than just encouraging young people to dream big—there must be tangible opportunities for those dreams to become reality.
The event, themed “Empowering the Youth to Create Quality Families in an Inclusive Society,” aimed to raise awareness about global population trends and their impact on development. The theme was not merely a policy statement but a powerful call to action. It urged everyone to invest strategically and compassionately in the future of the youth.

Gomashie pointed out that Ghana has approximately 13 million young people, representing a significant and dynamic workforce. She stressed that this demographic holds great potential for innovation and productivity. However, this potential must be nurtured through the right skills and guidance. She warned that failing to support these young individuals could result in missed opportunities for societal transformation.
She also encouraged the youth to take entrepreneurship and skills training seriously. In the 21st century, success is no longer solely dependent on memorization and certification. Instead, it requires critical thinking, digital literacy, emotional intelligence, collaboration, and adaptability. Gomashie urged young people to embrace any opportunity that provides a decent living and wage, as it can lead to a fulfilling life.
In addition to her message to the youth, Gomashie called on educators to help students develop the right attitude. She emphasized that teachers should not only focus on academic knowledge but also on instilling values and emotional growth. According to her, attitude plays a crucial role in shaping a person’s success. Educators should assist students in identifying their strengths and working on them to achieve their full potential.
The event was organized by the National Population Council (NPC) in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and other stakeholders. As part of the activities, several journalists were recognized for their contributions to the nation’s development. This acknowledgment highlighted the important role media plays in promoting awareness and driving positive change.
