Tesla Prototype Sparks Excitement for Affordable Electric Vehicle
A new prototype from Tesla is generating excitement among car enthusiasts who believe it could signal the arrival of a more affordable electric vehicle from the company that has long dominated the EV market. The speculation stems from recent activity within the Tesla shareholder community, where social media platforms have been buzzing with theories about a potential cheaper version of the Model Y.
The Model Y has held the title of the world’s top-selling car for nearly two years before being overtaken by Toyota’s RAV4 in 2024. Now, images and footage circulating on X suggest that Tesla may be preparing to introduce an affordable compact vehicle. This comes after CEO Elon Musk previously scrapped plans for two $25,000 models, code-named NV91 and NV92, despite denying claims they were canceled. These vehicles were intended to run on the platform designed for Tesla’s Cybercab, but production-line underutilization led to a strategic shift.
Now, the cheaper Tesla model is expected to use the existing Model 3 and Model Y platform. Based on the emerging images and footage, Electrek and the shareholder community speculate that this entry-level Tesla will be smaller than the original Model Y. Fred Lambert of Electrek noted that while it’s hard to confirm if it’s indeed smaller due to the angle of the vehicle compared to other Model Ys, it’s not impossible that the wheelbase is slightly smaller.
The stripped-down model is also expected to feature cheaper interior materials. This could include “maybe even no double-paned acoustic glass and a lesser audio system.” However, some readers of Electrek expressed skepticism about the benefits of a less expensive Model Y. One person pointed out that the success of the Model Y is largely due to its simplicity and quality, stating, “That is a problem. … The standard range already has a downgraded audio system, so what’s left to take out?”
Introducing a more affordable EV could help Tesla recover from a challenging first half of 2025, marked by declining sales and volatile stock prices. Musk’s involvement in politics has impacted the company’s performance, turning off some consumers who view supporting Tesla as endorsing his political views.
Automakers like BYD, Ford, Toyota, and Rivian have also expanded their EV offerings in recent years, driven by soaring demand for eco-friendly and cost-effective vehicles. This increased competition has affected Tesla’s buyer base, although it has benefited consumers by contributing to a decline in EV prices.
According to the International Energy Agency, EV sales rose by more than 25% last year, surpassing 17 million units. This year, the number is expected to exceed 20 million. The appeal of electric vehicles is evident, as consumers can save more than $1,000 annually on maintenance and energy costs compared to gas-powered cars.
For households that install solar panels to charge their EVs, the energy savings can be even more significant. Resources like EnergySage connect people with vetted installers and can save them up to $10,000 on installation.
