Latvian Leader Commends Germany’s Enhanced Defence Role

Latvia’s President Praises Germany’s Role in European Security

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has expressed strong support for Germany’s growing role in European security and defence, highlighting the importance of increased collaboration between nations. This sentiment comes ahead of a visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Riga, where discussions are expected to focus on key regional and international issues.

Rinkēvičs emphasized that Germany’s position as a leading European power and economic hub naturally positions it to take on greater responsibility in shaping European security policies. “Germany is a European great power and an economic centre. Therefore, it is logical that Germany assumes a greater role in European security and defence policy. This is to be welcomed,” he stated.

The Latvian president also welcomed the new German government’s plans to enhance its military capabilities. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has set ambitious goals to strengthen the Bundeswehr, aiming to make it the strongest conventional army in Europe. Rinkēvičs said these developments do not raise concerns in Latvia. “Germany has convincingly proven over decades that it is a democratic, constitutional state based on Western values. Therefore, I have no concerns,” he added. He further expressed full support for the development of the German armed forces, stating that it aligns with the security interests of all European nations.

Strengthening Collective Security

As Latvia prepares to host Steinmeier, the discussions are expected to cover a range of topics, including bilateral relations and regional security challenges. The Latvian president described the relationship between Latvia and Germany as “very good” and highlighted the importance of continued cooperation.

One of the primary concerns for Latvia, as a Baltic country located on NATO’s eastern flank, is the ongoing threat posed by Russia. Rinkēvičs noted that the Russian aggression against Ukraine is a direct challenge to European peace and stability. “The greatest shared challenges are, of course, Russian aggression against Ukraine and the threat to peace and security in Europe posed by Russia,” he said. He stressed the need for significant improvements in the EU’s security, defence, and competitiveness.

Rinkēvičs argued that collective efforts are essential to address these challenges. “We can only manage this together and by doing more than we have done so far,” he emphasized. In response to the threat from Russia, Latvia has taken several measures, including increasing military spending, rearmament, reintroducing conscription, and reinforcing its eastern border.

A Longstanding Partnership

This visit marks the 12th time that Steinmeier has visited Latvia on an official mission, reflecting the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two nations. Rinkēvičs expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to engage in open and honest discussions with Steinmeier. “I have known Frank-Walter for a long time and greatly value the opportunity to discuss any topic with him openly and honestly,” he said.

Both leaders have a history of working together in their respective roles. Previously serving as foreign ministers, they now hold the highest offices in their countries. “This visit continues our regular dialogue – we meet practically every year,” Rinkēvičs noted, underscoring the significance of maintaining consistent communication between the two nations.

In conclusion, Rinkēvičs’ remarks reflect a deep confidence in Germany’s commitment to European security and a shared vision for strengthening collective defence. As the two leaders prepare to meet, their discussions are likely to reinforce the partnership between Latvia and Germany in addressing the complex security landscape of the region.
