Lassa Fever Claims 156 Lives in Nigeria – NCDC Sounds Alarm

As of this year, Nigeria has recorded 156 fatalities due to Lassa fever, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), which announced this on Tuesday.

In its most recent report for Week 31 (July 28 to August 3, 2025), the agency reported nine new cases, an increase from three in the prior week. The death count for 2025 has already surpassed the same period last year, with the mortality rate now standing at 18.7 percent, compared to 17.3 percent in 2024.

A total of 836 verified cases have been documented in 21 states and 105 local government areas, among 6,851 suspected cases.

Ondo State leads the list with 33 percent of all cases, followed by Bauchi (23%), Edo (17%), Taraba (14%), and Ebonyi (3%). The majority of patients are young adults between the ages of 21 and 30.

The NCDC attributed the increase in fatalities to delayed hospital visits, inadequate health-seeking behaviors caused by treatment expenses, and unsanitary conditions in vulnerable regions.

“The rise in fatalities serves as a loud alarm for immediate and long-term measures,” the organization cautioned, calling on governments to enhance early identification, swift reaction, and public education.

No fresh cases among healthcare professionals were recorded this week, although the NCDC has sent 10 quick intervention teams to impacted regions and provided medical supplies to enhance detection efforts.

It has also introduced online training focused on infection control and is increasing awareness campaigns in high-risk neighborhoods.

“The increasing death rate is more than just a number – it’s a warning. We need to take strong action to stop more lives from being lost,” the report emphasized.
