The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP), in collaboration with Lahore Qalandars, has launched its nationwide cricket talent hunt trials, which officially commence today (Friday) in Quetta. The three-day trials, part of the program’s first phase, are being held at the BUITEMS (Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences) cricket ground. This ambitious drive is the result of a powerful collaboration between the PMYP, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and Lahore Qalandars, the reigning champions of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
According to Javed Ali Memon, Director Sports at the HEC, the trials in Quetta will see participation from aspiring cricketers across various districts of Balochistan, offering them a rare platform to showcase their skills. The goal is not only to unearth hidden cricketing talent but to nurture it with professional training and eventually pave their way to national and international cricketing platforms.
‘This initiative is part of a broader government vision to empower youth through sports, education, employment, and digital innovation,’ Memon remarked. ‘We aim to offer real opportunities for youth who have the passion but lack access to resources.’
In a message to mark the launch, Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Chairman of Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, reaffirmed the PMYP’s commitment to unlocking the potential of youth in all spheres of life, ranging from IT and sports to aerospace and agriculture. He expressed confidence that the youth of Balochistan, armed with natural talent and resilience, would not only benefit from this opportunity but also help shape a brighter future for Pakistan.
Professor Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman of HEC, highlighted that Pakistani universities and the HEC are working in close partnership with the government to develop sports infrastructure and opportunities nationwide. ‘These trials represent a crucial step in advancing the sports ecosystem in Balochistan and Pakistan as a whole. We are proud to provide these young athletes with a platform to dream bigger and aim higher,’ he said.
