Secretaries revealed strategies to construct six ammunition plants within the UK and manufacture 7,000 long-distance arms, encompassing assault drones and accurate missiles.
Sources indicated that the initial factory will commence operations within the coming years, with all six locations expected to be prepared during the current parliamentary term.
An additional £1.5 billion will be allocated to construct these facilities. According to ministers, the proposals are expected to generate over 1,000 new employment opportunities.
Defence Secretary John Healey stated that it was essential for Britain to transition towards a state of warfighting readiness in order to discourage potential opponents, adding that these new measures serve as a clear message to Moscow.
Government officials stated that the updated arsenal will feature drones capable of crossing international boundaries to initiate assaults on Russia from Britain’s facility in Estonia.
They will also incorporate long-range missiles like Storm Shadows, and might include hypersonic missiles capable of travelling faster than the speed of sound.
In an article for The Mail on Sunday, Mr Healey stated that the 7,000 arms manufactured in the UK are intended to ‘discourage threats such as Russia.’
However, critics cautioned that the government wasn’t being ambitious or quick enough.
James Cartlidge, the shadow defence secretary, described the review as a “damp squib,” stating further: ” Labour has spent nearly a year on this Strategic Defence Review only to confirm what everyone understood last summer — we must immediately start ordering additional ammunition due to current threats and the necessity of replenishing supplies sent to Ukraine.”
Instead of moving with the necessary speed and scope, Labor has hesitated and procrastinated.
The reality is that the Treasury has utilized the defense review as an excuse to postpone taking action, placing cost-cutting above swift rearmament. Meanwhile, Labor had to refute claims of a rift within the Cabinet regarding defense spending.
Mr Healey informed The Times on Friday that he has ‘no doubt’ the objective of reaching 3% of GDP will be achieved “during the upcoming parliamentary term.”
However, this statement contradicted the official stance – which maintained that the objective would be achieved “once economic circumstances permit.”
A confidential official alleged that the Defence Secretary deviated from the script in an attempt to pressure the Treasury into providing a stronger financial pledge for his department.
However, supporters of Mr Healey indicated that his remarks demonstrated his ‘support for the Chancellor’s handling of the economy’.
A source stated: “He was sharing his viewpoint, which is that he completely trusts the government to fulfill its aim of allocating 3 percent of GDP towards defense during the upcoming parliamentary term.”
According to defence officials, the stockpile of 7,000 long-range arms will serve as a deterrence against potential aggression from Russia in the future.
It will probably feature bunker-busting Storm Shadow missiles capable of reaching speeds up to 600 mph and utilizing GPS tracking for accurate target engagement.
Sources within defence circles assert that the UK plans to acquire numerous units of theFuture Cruise/Anti-Ship Weapon (FC/ASW). This missile system is set to replaceStorm Shadow and has the capability to launch from naval ships, submarines, or theRAF’sTyphoon fighter jets.
A version of this missile, jointly developed with France and Italy, reportedly includes an engine that enables it to reach speeds up to four times faster than sound.
In a separate statement, The Mail on Sunday reports that British Army units stationed in Estonia are set to receive numerous advanced HX-2 suicide drones.
The distinctive ‘X-wing’ drones have a range of more than 60 miles and would be used to destroy tanks and bunkers as well as attack enemy helicopters.
They will be constructed by a firm named Helsing from Germany, anticipated to establish a covert facility in the UK.
It is known that the drones, costing approximately £100,000 each and employing artificial intelligence to bypass air defenses, will ultimately be deployed throughout the Army.
