SEATTLE – The Seattle Krakenhave come to an agreement with forward Kaapo Kakko on a three-year contractcontract extension to avoid salary arbitration.
Kakko’s agreement has an average annual value of $4.525 million.
Securing a deal with Kaapo was a main focus this summer,” said general manager Jason Botterill in a statement. “We realized early on that he would be a key member of our team going forward. He has physical presence, talent, and exceptional ability to create scoring opportunities, and isn’t hesitant to go to the net. He quickly became part of our group, and we’re excited to have him signed with us.
Kakko, 24, came to the Kraken in December through a deal with the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Will Borgen. In 49 games with Seattle, Kakko accumulated 30 points, including 10 goals and 20 assists. Over an entire 82-game season, Kakko was on track for 50 points with Seattle, which would have been a career-best and placed him third on the team last year, behind Jared McCann (61) and Chandler Stephenson (51).
Seattle inked restricted free agent forward Tye Kartye to a two-year, $1.25 million deal following the issuance of a qualifying offer earlier this month. Defenseman Ryker Evans also received a qualifying offer, but is not eligible for salary arbitration.
