Kolkata Police Reopen 12 Cases Against Rape Accused Monojit Mishra

Reopening of Cases Against Accused in Rape Incident at Kolkata Law College

The police in Kolkata have decided to reopen several cases against Monojit Mishra, who is the prime accused in a rape case involving a law college student in Kasba. According to sources, this decision has been made after a thorough review of past legal proceedings.

Mishra faces a total of 12 charges, including hooliganism, causing injuries with weapons, and orchestrating violence against junior students by bringing in anti-social elements onto the campus. Most notably, there are repeated allegations of sexual harassment directed at female students within the college premises. These charges have led to the reopening of two of the 12 cases already registered against him.

One of the reopened cases was filed in 2023, involving charges of hooliganism and sexual assault. The second case, which was also reopened, dates back to 2024 and involves similar charges of hooliganism. In both instances, Mishra has been identified as an arrested individual.

The police and their legal teams are currently reviewing the remaining 10 cases that were previously registered against Mishra. They are assessing whether these cases have sufficient merit to warrant further legal action. This process is expected to take time, as each case will be examined individually for evidence and procedural validity.

However, this development has raised questions about the timely actions taken by the police when the initial cases were first registered. Critics argue that if the authorities had acted promptly on these previous complaints, the recent rape incident might have been prevented. The case has sparked public debate about the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing such serious crimes.

To date, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the rape case. Among them, Mishra is identified as the main perpetrator, while Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay are considered facilitators in the crime. The fourth arrest involves Pinaki Banerjee, a security guard at the law college. According to the victim’s statement recorded with the police on June 25, Banerjee was the only witness to the incident and described as “sole helpless” during the event.

In addition to the ongoing legal proceedings, fresh allegations have emerged against Mishra. He is now accused of facilitating the admission of ineligible students into the law college every year in exchange for large sums of money, ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh. These claims add another layer of complexity to the investigation and raise concerns about potential corruption within the institution.

As the police continue to investigate, the case remains under intense scrutiny. The community is watching closely to see how the legal system handles these serious allegations and whether justice will be served for the victim and others affected by Mishra’s alleged actions.
