King Charles Eases Dress Code at Buckingham Palace Tennis Courts
King Charles, the British monarch, is making changes to the rules at one of Buckingham Palace’s outdoor features. The 76-year-old king has reportedly relaxed the dress code for those using the palace’s tennis courts. Previously, players were required to wear all white on the private courts at Buckingham Palace. However, the new rule states that while tennis whites are “preferred,” they are no longer considered “essential.” This shift reflects the king’s desire to reduce the sense of restriction that protocol can sometimes impose, especially during recreational activities like playing tennis.
The Buckingham Palace tennis court was built in 1919 during the reign of King George V. While King Charles isn’t particularly known for being a big fan of tennis, previous monarchs have shown a stronger interest in the sport. For instance, King George VI was known to play tennis, even challenging three-time Wimbledon champion Fred Perry on the palace grounds in the 1930s.
In addition to its historical significance, the court has also been the site of notable events. In 2000, it hosted a charity match benefiting the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Full Stop Campaign. The event featured a high-profile showdown between John McEnroe and Björn Borg, with Anna Kournikova also competing. Claudia Schiffer was among the spectators, adding to the star-studded atmosphere.
It’s possible that Princess Kate has played on these courts as well. The Princess of Wales, who is 43 years old, is a known fan of tennis. She has her own court at Anmer Hall, her country home, where she often plays with Prince William. Wimbledon, the prestigious tennis tournament, still enforces an all-white dress code for players. However, the rules have seen some slight adjustments in recent years. A new amendment introduced in 2022 allowed women to wear solid, mid or dark-colored undershorts, provided they are no longer than their shorts or skirt.
Since becoming king in 2022, King Charles has implemented several changes to the recreational facilities at Buckingham Palace.
