Kimberley to Host Regional Science Fair for Future Innovators

A Platform for Innovation and Discovery

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is preparing to host its regional science fair in Kimberley on August 16 at the Sol Plaatje University. This event serves as a vital platform for school learners to demonstrate their innovative ideas, scientific research, and problem-solving abilities. The fair is an essential step in nurturing young talent and encouraging a passion for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI).

This year, more than 6,000 projects will be showcased at the regional science fair. These projects have been carefully selected from over 17,500 learners who presented their research at school and district expos. The selection process ensures that only the most promising and creative projects move forward to compete at the regional level.

Mologadi Motshele, acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “By cultivating interest and excellence in STEMI from an early age, the Eskom Expo not only develops individual potential but also contributes to the broader goals of economic growth, innovation, and social equity.” The fair provides an opportunity for learners to interact with peers, educators, and professionals in various STEMI fields, helping them develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills.

Participants will have the chance to compete for prestigious awards, including:

  • Best Female Project
  • Best Innovation Project
  • Best Energy Project
  • Best Development Project

These awards recognize outstanding contributions and encourage students to push the boundaries of their creativity and knowledge.

The regional science fair will take place on August 16 at the Sol Plaatje University, South Campus, Multi-Purpose Hall. The top-performing projects will then be showcased at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) at the Emperors Palace Conference Centre in Kempton Park from October 6 to 10. At the ISF, participants will compete for prizes, bursaries, and opportunities to present their work at international science fairs across the United States, Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Call for Judges

Professionals from various fields are encouraged to apply as judges for the regional science fairs. Engineers, doctors, veterinarians, teachers, lecturers, researchers, scientists, and IT professionals are all welcome to contribute their expertise.

Judges will gain valuable experience in evaluating research projects and can earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. Those interested in applying can visit www.exposcience.co.za to submit their details.

This initiative not only supports the development of young scientists but also fosters collaboration between the academic and professional communities. It reinforces the importance of mentorship and guidance in shaping the next generation of innovators.
