Kids’ Wall Art and Toy Mishaps Cost Parents Millions

The vacation period offers a delightful series of outings, including picnics, bicycle adventures, and excursions to the coast with your young children.

But that happiness quickly changes to sadness at home when their desire to release energy results in paint on the walls, food clogging the washing machine, and toys lodged in the drain.

In reality, the damage they cause results in millions of dollars in home repairs for all parents annually, according to a survey.

The school holiday season is the most common time for these incidents, with 57 percent of parents reporting they received significant charges.

Nearly seven out of ten – 67 percent – reported that their children had drawn on walls and furniture, while 43 percent needed to contact a plumber after toys became lodged in the toilet.

In the meantime, 47 percent mentioned that appliances needed repairs after porridge, marmalade, custard, and other foods became lodged in game consoles and DVD players, while 40 percent reported that liquids like milk had seeped into hi-fi speakers and washing machines.

The festive chaos continues, as 42 percent reported their children caused water damage by leaving taps running, while 20 percent mentioned a child turned the heating on during the summer.

An additional seven percent mentioned that kids were responsible for expensive expenses due to using sofas and beds as trampolines, shattering windows, and flooding the yard with the garden hose.

The typical cost is £265 every time an issue occurs, and 36 percent of individuals find it necessary to hire a professional to fix the problem.

An additional 12 percent reach out to a friend or family member for assistance, while 8 percent file an insurance claim.

Liam Sharkey, representing the home assistance company HomeServe, which conducted a survey among 2,000 British parents, stated: ‘These incidents happen more frequently than people realize and often surprise parents. Children’s accidents cause the most chaos during school breaks. A minor accident can quickly lead to expensive repairs.’
