A Decade of Service in Lincoln
During the summer months in Lincoln, Nebraska, residents might notice some areas looking a bit different—this time for the better. The transformation is likely due to the efforts of a youth group known as “I Heart LNK.” For the past ten years, this group has been making a positive impact on the city through various community service projects.
Each year, dozens of young people from the Capital City come together to contribute their time and energy to improve public spaces. Over the course of one week, three groups of about ten kids each take on tasks such as laying mulch, cleaning lawns, and performing other acts of service. Even on the final day of the event, the participants remain energetic and enthusiastic about their work.
“I don’t do this for recognition or anything,” said Isabelle Going, a member of I Heart LNK. “I don’t do it for praise or anything like that. I do it because it makes me happy.”
The experience isn’t always easy. Bruce Riddle, a mentor with I Heart LNK, noted that the first part of the week was particularly hot and physically demanding. However, he emphasized that the students embraced the challenge when they understood the purpose behind their efforts.
“It’s not just about what we’re doing,” Riddle explained. “It’s about why we’re doing it. The goal is to truly bless our city and help people.”
The event is organized by Christ Church, which runs the initiative. They expressed hope that the program will continue for another decade or even longer. Their vision is to keep inspiring the next generation of volunteers and maintain the positive changes that have been made over the years.
Community Impact and Youth Engagement
The work done by I Heart LNK goes beyond just physical improvements. It also fosters a sense of responsibility and community spirit among the participants. By engaging in service projects, the youth learn valuable lessons about teamwork, dedication, and the importance of giving back.
The program has grown significantly since its inception, attracting more volunteers each year. This growth reflects the strong support from both the community and local organizations. As the group continues to expand, so does its influence on the city of Lincoln.
Future Goals and Continued Success
Looking ahead, the organizers of I Heart LNK are focused on sustaining the momentum they’ve built over the past ten years. They believe that by continuing to involve young people in meaningful service, they can create lasting change in the community.
Some key goals include:
- Expanding the number of participants each year
- Increasing the variety of service projects offered
- Strengthening partnerships with local businesses and organizations
- Encouraging more long-term commitment from volunteers
With the right support and continued enthusiasm, there’s no doubt that I Heart LNK will continue to make a difference in Lincoln for many years to come. Their efforts serve as a reminder that even small actions can lead to significant positive outcomes when done with heart and purpose.
