Kidnappers Hold Victims Captive Post Alleged 0K Ransom Payment in Kwara

A wave of abductions across parts of Kwara State has taken a disturbing turn, as kidnappers continue to hold victims captive for several weeks despite receiving huge ransom payments.

Daily Trust reliably gathered that N100 million was reportedly paid by relatives of a filling station owner, Alhaji Abass Abubakar of Ndeji and his manager, who were abducted in the Gbugbu community of Edu Local Government Area.

A similar incident involved a cattle rearer who was killed in Tashagi, and five of his children abducted – all within the same federal constituency, it was gathered.

Hon. Ahmed Adamu Saba, the lawmaker representing Edu, Moro and Patigi in the House of Representatives, who confirmed the development, raised the alarm over the weekend concerning the siege on the community. He stated that the kidnappers are now demanding more money.

He decried the continued wave of kidnappings and called on President Bola Tinubu, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and security agencies to urgently intervene.

He expressed concern that his constituents can no longer sleep peacefully or go about their daily activities due to the persistent threats.

‘The victims have been held for over two weeks now, and their captors have continued to increase the ransom demands, threatening to harm them,’ Hon. Saba said in a statement issued through his Special Assistant on Digital Media, Bello Hamidu.

‘My people can no longer farm or run their businesses without fear. This level of violence and fear is unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue,’ he added, describing the attacks as both inhuman and criminal.

Locals told our correspondent that about 20 people have been kidnapped after the two incidents.

But the police said they have intensified efforts to dismantle the criminal networks responsible.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, ‘The abductors had demanded a ransom of N200 million,’ adding that a suspected gunrunner, Isiaka Jimoh, was arrested at his blacksmith shop in Ogundele, Edu LGA, after operatives acting on credible intelligence traced a ransom call to his location.

Adekimi told Daily Trust that ‘I can say only about four incidents occurred after the two cases.’

He said ‘The police used advanced surveillance and tracking tools to narrow down the location, and a thorough search of the suspect’s workshop led to the recovery of a cache of weapons, including six locally made single-barrel guns, eight dane guns, two short-barrel firearms, two live cartridges, and five expended shells.

‘Jimoh claimed the weapons were brought to him for repair by members of local vigilante groups and that the two short-barrel firearms were inherited from his late father,’ Adekimi added.
