Rising Star Khurram Shahzad Eyes National White-Ball Selection
Pakistan’s promising fast bowler, Khurram Shahzad, is setting his sights on making a significant impact in the national white-ball team. His recent performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the T20 Blast in England have caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts and selectors alike. At just 25 years old, Khurram is currently representing Worcestershire County Cricket Club and is determined to showcase his versatility as a bowler across different formats.
Khurram made his Test debut in December 2023 against Australia, playing six red-ball matches for Pakistan. However, he is now focused on proving himself in limited-overs cricket. He remains confident that consistent performances in league cricket will eventually earn him a spot in the national white-ball squad.
His journey in the PSL this year was particularly impressive. Representing Quetta Gladiators, Khurram took 12 wickets in 8 matches, playing a crucial role in helping his team reach the final. Although they narrowly lost to Lahore Qalandars, the campaign was a testament to his growing skills and determination. The support from former captain Azhar Ali also played a key role in securing his contract with Worcestershire for the remainder of the English season.
Despite initial challenges due to the sudden change in weather, Khurram has now fully adapted to county life. He has embraced the learning experience and praised the environment, facilities, and camaraderie within the team. He believes that the conditions in England provide an ideal platform for fast bowlers to refine their skills.
One of the key influences in his career is South African pace legend Dale Steyn. Khurram often draws inspiration from Steyn, noting their similar bowling actions. He regularly studies Steyn’s videos, aiming to replicate his rhythm and aggression. Additionally, he has benefited from the guidance of fellow Pakistani pacer Hasan Ali, who shared valuable insights about adapting to English conditions.
Looking ahead, Khurram is committed to giving his best performance for Worcestershire. He hopes that his efforts in England will significantly enhance his chances of being selected for Pakistan’s T20 and ODI teams. With a strong work ethic and a clear vision, Khurram is steadily building a reputation as a formidable fast bowler ready to take on international cricket. His journey so far highlights not only his talent but also his dedication to continuous improvement.
