A Kent college is set to receive a portion of £100m in funding as it joins the ranks of 10 specialized construction colleges throughout the UK.
North Kent College in Dartford is set to transform into a Technical Excellence College as part of a government initiative aimed at preparing construction professionals including bricklayers, roofers, and electricians.
A representative from the institution expressed “pleasure” at being involved in the initiative and is eager to advance training programs in the Southeast.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson stated that the new funding is intended to develop “locally grown expertise” to support economic expansion, including the government’s commitment to construct 1.5 million homes.
The institution stated: “Given our extensive background in construction training and significant projects like the Lower Thames Crossing and Ebbsfleet Garden City nearby, this is an exhilarating period for advancing construction skills in Kent.”
We are excited about collaborating closely with our two Kent partner colleges and also assisting broader efforts with other South East regional colleges to advance and improve construction training and employer involvement in the future.
Technical Excellence Colleges aim to educate 40,000 construction students by 2029, according to the government, and will collaborate with training organizations to enhance quality.
The plans come alongside another goal, which was revealed in March, aiming to educate 60,000 construction workers. The Department for Education stated that this effort is intended to decrease its dependence on overseas labor.
Approximately 35,000 positions are required to be filled within the construction industry, as reported by the Office for National Statistics.
A government representative also stated that the action would “enable the sector to utilize indigenous, British skills” instead of relying on foreign labor.
