Whether it’s a status symbol, a family heirloom, or merely an accoutrement to a stylish fit, a watch can mean many things. Ironically, however, the very thing they were invented to do – tell time – is one of the lesser functions of timepieces in today’s cellular phone era.
But still, people still love their watches.
And Kelly Slater recently dropped a new piece with watchmaker Breitling: the Superocean B31. This one being inspired by Hawaiian surf culture – something Slater has immersed himself in from a young age, and later in life, calling the Islands (one of) his home(s).
“From as early as I can remember,” Slater narrates in a new spot for the watch, “I dreamt of traveling to and living in Hawaii. It was this far-off land of amazing waves, perfect weather, and the ultimate surfing lifestyle. After living here, I’ve realized it’s much bigger than that. The people, the community, the nature – they’re all so intertwined. The respect Hawaiians have for their people and their land and their culture runs deep. It makes Hawaii even more special than what I dreamt of as a kid. And now, I call it home.”
How much will this piece set you back? Well, there’s two options – one $6,450 and one $6,750.

It’s not the first time Slater has collab’d with Breitling for a watch, either. Last year, he, Stephanie Gilmore, and Sally Fitzgibbons teamed up with the watchmakers as their “surf squad,” with a line of timepieces ranging from $4,950 to $5,050.
This new one is a bit pricier. And apparently, it’s limited edition, too.
“Breitling has been with me for years,” Slater added about the new piece. “This watch reflects everything I love—the ocean, nature, and the easygoing style I’ve always connected with.”
