Trevino said it is encouraging to see community members turn their passion for the arts into action.

“The city encourages more participation from all community members,” he said. “We look forward to collaborating and promoting cultural and art-related events that highlight the beauty of our culturally rich community.”

Santana said he was appointed to the commission because of his years of promoting the arts and border history.

“The Fine Arts and Culture Commission has existed in Laredo for several years. It’s made up of creators and enthusiasts eager to see the city advance in the arts and further enrich its binational culture and traditions,” he said.

He added that the commission oversees a budget allocated to cultural projects across the city.

“This commission decides which projects receive funding and helps develop cultural initiatives,” he said. “It’s a great generator of ideas for Laredo’s progress.”

Santana said Laredo has experienced significant cultural growth in recent years but still has room to expand.

“For example, CAMINARTE is a great way to get involved in the arts or simply learn what’s happening in our city,” he said. “It takes place the first Friday of every month from 6 p.m. onward. Cultural organizations open their doors downtown for exhibitions, concerts or recitals.”

“Every month, Laredo dedicates a day to celebrating the arts, and everyone should know — it’s a cultural celebration.”

“I encourage the community to get more involved in these types of commissions,” he said. “There are opportunities for growth if you’re an artist. It’s simply a matter of submitting a proposal, and we’ll try to bring these cultural projects to life.”
