Joey Badass Claims the Crown: A New Era of New York Rap
Joey Badass has made a bold statement, declaring himself the King of New York. This declaration comes with the release of his first single, “ABK,” from his upcoming album Lonely At The Top. The track, named after the abbreviation for “anybody killer”—a term used to describe someone who would kill anyone regardless of their connections—sees Joey taking on the topic of who truly deserves the title of the best in New York.
In the song, he poses a rhetorical question: “Who the King of New York is?” followed by a challenge: “If it ain’t me, then who? I’ma need the proof. If ni**as want to try to dispute, tell them get in the booth.” This seems to be directed at today’s young rappers rather than all New York artists across different eras.

Joey also references the legacy of iconic New York rappers like Nas, Biggie, and Jay-Z, stating, “They know who the illest spitter in the city after Nas, Big, and Jigga.” This line highlights his respect for the past while asserting his place among the greats.
Before the release of “ABK,” Joey had a more measured approach when discussing his ranking in an interview with TMZ. He said, “I don’t really think it’s my place to rank myself—you know I’m biased.” However, he still expressed confidence in his abilities, saying, “I think that I’m one of the illest, but that’s me and I think I’m supposed to feel like that.”
He added, “I definitely think there’s a lot more work to do, and I’m inspired and charged up to do that work so that the world can get in tune with what I already know.” This shows his determination to prove himself and elevate his status in the rap game.

A New Album and a New Challenge
Joey’s new album, Lonely At The Top, is set to drop on August 1. The album promises to be a significant moment in his career, building on the momentum of “ABK” and his recent interactions with other artists.
Earlier this year, Joey took a shot at Kendrick Lamar during a diss track aimed at TDE artist Ray Vaughn. In the track, he criticized Vaughn, saying, “What kinda Top Dawg is you? You more Shih Tzu, you was cloned in the lab, dog, you artificial.” He also suggested that the beef between him and Vaughn actually helped Vaughn more than Lamar’s former label ever did.
The tension between Joey and Vaughn began earlier in the year when Joey released “The Ruler’s Back,” which downplayed West Coast rap. In May, Joey engaged in a verbal exchange with Ab-Soul, a former labelmate of Kendrick Lamar, during an episode of Red Bull 1250’s Spiral Freestyle series.
After Ab-Soul rapped that Joey was “lucky that Soul ain’t stepping in,” Joey responded by calling West Coast rappers “sensitive.” He added, “First off, I could never hate the West Coast. But since nas comin’ for Joe, f*ksit then, let’s go. N*as must’ve forgot what Dot said on ‘Control.’ There’s still a buncha sensitive rappers in they pajama clothes. I guess, this ain’t no East versus West. I just think that I’m the best, as a matter fact, I know. These bars could put bad boys on death row.”
A Growing Legacy
Joey Badass continues to make waves in the rap industry, not only through his music but also through his bold statements and challenges. His latest work signals a new chapter in his career, one where he is not only claiming his place but also pushing boundaries and setting the stage for future battles.
As fans eagerly await the release of Lonely At The Top, it’s clear that Joey is ready to take on whatever comes next. Whether it’s facing off against other rappers or continuing to build his legacy, he remains focused on proving that he is indeed the King of New York.
