New Limited-Edition Bourbon from James B. Beam Distilling Co.
James B. Beam Distilling Co., the home of the iconic Jim Beam Original bourbon, has recently unveiled a new limited-edition whiskey that is generating excitement among whiskey enthusiasts. This latest release, called Lineage Batch #2, is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey that stands out for its age and unique production process.
Lineage Batch #2 is the second release in the Lineage series, following the initial batch that was also 15 years old. Both batches are crafted using the classic Beam mashbill and bottled at 55.5 percent ABV (111 proof). However, there are notable differences between the two. Batch 1 was made from 15-year-old barrels aged in Warehouse K at the distillery in Clermont, KY. In contrast, Batch 2 consists of barrels that range in age from 15 to 20 years, with most of them aged at the Booker Noe Plant in Boston, KY, and a smaller portion coming from the Clermont site.
The location where the barrels are aged plays a significant role in the final flavor profile of the bourbon, especially when the same mashbill is used across different sites. Additionally, these barrels were likely matured on lower floors of the warehouses to prevent them from becoming overly oaky, given that 15 years is a substantial age for Kentucky bourbon.
This isn’t the first time Beam has released a 15-year-old bourbon. The Knob Creek lineup includes 15 and 18-year-old expressions, while the Hardin’s Creek lineup features Jacob’s Well with whiskeys aged for 15 and 17 years. What makes Lineage Batch #2 unique is that it was created by two generations of Beam distillers: seventh-generation family member Fred Noe and his son, eighth-generation family member Freddie Noe. According to the brand, both selected the barrels for this release. This marks the first time that Freddie’s name appears on a bourbon, as his Little Book series consists of blends of bourbon and other types of whiskey, which doesn’t count as a pure bourbon release.
Although the official tasting notes have not yet been sampled, they describe a nose with creamy toffee, vanilla, and oak; a palate featuring leather, char, and creme brulee; and a finish with mature oak. Those interested in trying Lineage Batch #2 will need to visit Kentucky, as it is a distillery-only release with an SRP of $250. Some bottles of the previous batch may be available on secondary market websites. For those looking to explore the rest of the Beam lineup, websites like ReserveBar offer a variety of options.
