Jewish Community Optimistic as Iran and Israel Ceasefire Talks Begin

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio
(WKBN) – As both Israel and Iran accused each other of violating
a ceasefire
just hours after it went into effect overnight, leaders with the local Jewish Federation remain hopeful.

“That cooler heads will ultimately prevail and there will be a cessation of the shooting back and forth,” said Bonnie Burdman, with the Youngstown Jewish Federation.

Burdman said without Israel’s attacks on Iranian targets, coupled with the U.S. bombing of nuclear facilities on Saturday, the ceasefire likely would not have happened.

“This was a very important military moment in time that Israel and the United States coordinated together very deliberately,” Burdman said.

Still,
President Trump was very critical of what the Israelis called retaliation for an overnight missile attack.
Burdman says there continues to be a lot of distrust between the two countries.

“What we’ve learned, certainly in the Jewish community, is that when somebody wants us dead, we believe them,” Burdman said.

Burdman hopes the agreement will not only end the fighting between Iran and Israel, but could also pave the way for a resolution to the ongoing struggle in war-torn Gaza.

“Want everyone in the regional. not just citizens of Israel, but all of its neighbors to live in peace,” Burdman said.

The Arab-American Community Center of Youngstown issued this statement in response to the ceasefire.

We welcome the current ceasefire between Israel and Iran as a critical step toward de-escalation and regional stability. However, this development alone is insufficient. Without a simultaneous and sustained ceasefire in Gaza, the broader cycle of violence will persist, undermining any hope for lasting peace. True regional stability requires an inclusive approach that addresses all active fronts of conflict and prioritizes the protection of civilian lives across the region.
