JewBoy Sub Shop: Austin’s Beloved Tex-Mex Deli Closing

A Unique Fusion of Cultures and Flavors

A beloved sub shop in Central Texas, known for its unique blend of Jewish deli classics with a Tex-Mex twist, is closing its doors after four and a half years. The decision to shut down comes as the owner explores new opportunities. This establishment, named JewBoy Sub Shop, has been a staple in the North Austin neighborhood of Allandale since it first opened in March 2021.

The menu at JewBoy Sub Shop draws inspiration from both border flavors and Reform Jewish cuisine. Its owner, Mo Pittle, has a rich background that spans multiple cities. Born in Cleveland, he has ties to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., but ultimately grew up in El Paso. There, he was affectionately known as “El JewBoy,” a nickname that would later inspire the name of his sub shop.

This nickname not only reflects Pittle’s personal history but also celebrates the fusion of cultures and love for food. Now, the business is saying goodbye to its North Austin roots, with its final day of operations set for Sunday, July 20. Pittle confirmed that the closure is due to the lease ending, along with exciting new ventures on the horizon.

In a social media post, Pittle shared, “Gone, but not forgotten is the theme here as many of our menu items, or versions of them will make their way into our other locations.” He also hinted at future plans, stating, “Stay tuned for our next journey starting next month. Details forthcoming.”

Expanding the JewBoy Brand

While the sub shop is closing, Pittle continues to expand the JewBoy brand in Austin. He operates another establishment called JewBoy Burgers, a diner located off Airport Boulevard. This restaurant also blends Tex-Mex and Reform Jewish flavors, offering a variety of burgers, burritos, and latkes.

In June, Pittle announced plans to introduce the JewBoy Sliders concept inside Pins Mechanical Company, which is located within the St. Elmo Public Market. Currently, JewBoy operates two slider-centric trailers, but the location at Pins will be the first brick-and-mortar spot for this concept.

Pittles described Pins as an “adult playground,” emphasizing the idea of keeping things affordable and quick. “These are impulse buys. You’re not there for a meal. You’re there to have a good time…and sliders are easy,” he said.

Unlike the JewBoy Burgers restaurant, the new slider location will feature bar-esque food such as loaded fries, queso latkes, and beef, chicken, and spicy chicken sliders.

Final Day of Service

For those who want to celebrate the legacy of JewBoy Sub Shop, the last day of service on Sunday, July 20, will offer special food and drink deals. This is a chance for customers to experience the unique offerings one last time before the doors close permanently.

If you’re interested in visiting, the address is 6701 Burnet Road, Austin, TX 78757.

Other Updates and News

In addition to the closure of JewBoy Sub Shop, there are other updates happening in the area. For example, a suspect in a ‘love triangle’ murder case was found dead, according to BCSO. Meanwhile, a popular horse-riding TV show is set to film near San Antonio and is inviting locals to join.
