Jesse Watters’ Embarrassing U-turn on Gavin Newsom Claims

Legal Tension Between Fox News Host and California Governor

Fox News host Jesse Watters recently issued a reluctant apology to California Governor Gavin Newsom, as their ongoing legal dispute continued to escalate. This came during Thursday’s episode of Watters’ show, where he addressed the accusations that the governor had lied about a phone call with President Donald Trump during the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.

Watters retracted his previous claims, stating that Newsom did not intentionally deceive anyone. Instead, he suggested that the governor was simply confused and unclear in his statements. “He wasn’t lying. He was just confusing and unclear. Next time, governor, why don’t you say what you mean?” Watters remarked, highlighting the need for clarity from Newsom.

The Defamation Lawsuit

Last month, Governor Newsom filed a $787 million defamation lawsuit against Watters and Fox News. The lawsuit accused the network of misleadingly editing a video of Trump to support the claim that he had spoken with Newsom before mobilizing the U.S. Marines on June 9. According to Newsom’s attorneys, the clip was deceptively edited to make it appear as though the call occurred more recently than it actually did.

The records showed that the call between Trump and Newsom took place days earlier, which could have led to a false implication that they discussed the troop deployment to Los Angeles. However, Newsom had previously stated publicly that he spoke to Trump after midnight on June 7, and the military was not part of their conversation.

Conflicting Accounts and Public Statements

Trump sent a screenshot to Fox News anchor John Roberts, showing the June 7 date of the phone call. This image was used on both Roberts’ and Watters’ shows, with a Fox News banner claiming, “Gavin lied about Trump’s call.” In response, Newsom denied the claim in a post on X, stating, “There was no call. Not even a voicemail. Americans should be alarmed that a President deploying Marines onto our streets doesn’t even know who he’s talking to.”

After filing the lawsuit on June 28 in a Delaware court, Newsom’s lawyers indicated they would drop the case if the governor received a retraction and a formal on-air apology. During his grudging apology, Watters mentioned that he believed Newsom’s X post asserted there was no call at all. “We thought the dispute was about whether there was a phone call at all when he said without qualification that there was no call,” he said. “Now Newsom’s telling us what was in his head when he wrote the tweet.”

No Sign of Retreat

Despite Watters’ concession, Newsom showed little sign of remorse or backing down. In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, he remarked, “Discovery will be fun. See you in court, buddy.” This indicates that the legal battle is far from over, with both parties prepared to continue their fight through the courts.
