McDonald’s Japan has discovered that its promotion of distributing Pokémon trading cards with Happy Meal combo meals led certain customers to purchase the meals in large quantities just to acquire the cards for resale, while throwing away the food.
The fast-food chain, which disclosed the mistake on Monday through a press statement, restricted the purchase of the Happy Set—referred to as the Happy Meal in other regions—to five per customer and took steps to stop the resale of the cards for more money before the three-day promotion starting Saturday.
However, the company acknowledged that its preparations were “inadequate” and issued a statement of regret. The initiative concluded on the very first day as numerous stores exhausted their supply of the cards.

Prior to the release, McDonald’s also requested that Japanese online auction platform Mercari Inc. assist with managing listings of the trading cards, which are a highly popular collectible item.
The quick-service restaurant announced it will introduce more rigorous policies in the future, including refusing access to individuals trying to purchase significant amounts of the meal deals.
